Can HERD mentality HURT You?
We’ve all heard of “herd mentality” which is basically following the “in” crowd or most popular way of thinking, acting or responding to something. But, in so doing, can herd mentality hurt us?
Let’s consider you are running a business and have a product going out to market. What if this product is completely unique, has a design that isn’t today’s norm and has features that no one has heard of? Do you hold back because no one else is creating a similar item? Following the crowd can hinder your creativity and ability to be innovative! In business or product development, these are definite qualities that you want and need if you want to stand out above the rest.
Some researchers have found that herd mentality can actually dampen or negatively affect our own natural instincts and responses to changes that occur around us (i.e. situational awareness). As a leader, it’s important to create a culture that encourages employees to be open and innovative and stray from the norm. As an organization or company, this may actually lead to “greener” pastures in the long run.
